The Poem "Ode to Sharon" was written in the late 1980's. My sister Sharon asked me to write a poem about her "incident". So I wrote this poem as though she was telling the story!
Ode To Sharon
My husband and my daughter
were carrying a ladder,
their movements were oh, so jerky,
but I knew what was the matter.
So I told them to co-ordinate
“left, right, left, right”.
But even with my guidance
they were quite a sight!
So, I took the ladder in my hands
and marched along so proud;
cadence in my every step,
my voice ringing right out loud.
“Left, right, left, right”
was my vocal song.
Everything was going smooth,
we were moving right along.
But in the course of our lives
some things weren’t meant to be,
and as I stepped out eagerly,
the hole I didn’t see.
My foot twisted sharply,
and I fell onto the ground.
The words I said I will not tell,
be glad you weren’t around.
We went to the hospital
to visit the emergency.
We waited, and we waited,
what seemed like an eternity.
The doctor’s diagnosis
was a torn ligament and a sprain.
I do not need to tell you that
I’ll not do that again!
As I sit for days and days
elevating my foot,
I can’t help but think that next time
I’ll just read me a book!
